Safety and Paddle Etiquette

14 Paddler’s Etiquette Rules

  1. Be respectful of the water: Our paddling trails and regional waterways are magnificent, and for many, they are sacred. Help protect them and keep them pristine for future generations.
  2. Be respectful of the land and landowners: Treat riverfronts and lakefronts with care. Much of the land along these waterways is privately owned. Do not trespass.
  3. Keep it peaceful: Excessive noise disturbs the experience for paddlers, landowners, and wildlife alike.
  4. Use only authorized put-ins and take-outs.
  5. Pack out your litter: Dispose of all garbage properly. Never leave waste in the water or along the shoreline.
  6. Do not drink alcohol while paddling: It is dangerous and increases the risk of accidents.
  7. Wear a PFD: Always wear your personal flotation device while paddling.
  8. Have a trip plan: Know your route and take-out point, and share your plan with someone on land. You can create a trip plan that notifies your emergency contacts with your route information on Canada’s Adventure Smart website here: Trip Plan | AdventureSmart.
  9. Dress for the water temperature: Even if the air is warm, the water may be cold. Dress appropriately to avoid hypothermia.
  10. Clean, wash, and dry your boat: Before entering any waterway, ensure your boat is free of invasive species.
  11. Travel and camp on durable surfaces: Try to stick to established routes and campsites when paddling; if you land elsewhere, use durable surfaces and camp at least 60 m from shorelines.
  12. Leave what you find: Preserve heritage by avoiding the disturbance of traditional, historical, and cultural sites, and by leaving stones, plants, and other natural objects in their original place and condition.
  13. Respect Wildlife: Observe animals from a distance and move away at any sign of distress. Please avoid feeding them, store your food and waste securely, avoid sensitive breeding and winter periods, and keep pets under control or at home while properly managing their waste.
  14. Be considerate of others: Act with courtesy to others by keeping noise low, and taking breaks on durable surfaces. Use drones only where permitted and share content that promotes responsible behaviour in nature.
