The Nashwaak River is one of Wolastoq Watershed’s top water trails for easy-access recreational paddling.
The focus for recreational paddlers is on the lower river from Penniac.
Surely one of Canada’s most stunning inner-city paddling routes, the lower portion of the river starting in historic Marysville is surprisingly natural, undeveloped wilderness, given that you’re travelling with a gentle current into Fredericton’s downtown core.
There’s a family-friendly paddling launch at the Marysville Heritage Centre, just 10 minutes from downtown Fredericton. For many, it’s pure magic and a great way to start a paddling weekend in the Capital Region with a short evening paddle. The route ends on the Wolastoq at Carleton Park, beside the fabulous Picaroons Roundhouse for a bite and an award-winning beer.
Up from Marysville at Penniac are launches that require intermediate skill to navigate through the Class I-II rapids at Marysville.
Additional intermediate and advanced paddling is possible upriver from Stanley and beyond during the spring and highwater periods.
The lower two main segments described here are the recreational paddler’s focus, surprisingly entirely inside City limits, but lulling the paddler into thinking they were on a far more remote wilderness route. The route below Marysville is also a top spot for kayak fishing.
Starting in the old mill town of Marysville, a National Historic District, the Nashwaak water trail is known for its natural, undeveloped beauty, completed with regular sightings of Great Blue Herons, Bald Eagles, Kingfisher, ducks and geese.
The route ends at the confluence of the Wolastoq (Saint John River) and an easy, short paddle to Carleton Park and the Picaroons Roundhouse.
